No better time to recall Gandhi’s TALISMAN – think of last persons in times of doubt and crisis.

Another example of lack of holistic policy formulation or a nationwide action. Policy induced disaster is seen today on national highways. This has always been a challenge “why do we have a homogeneous solution when we have heterogeneity of problems”. Even in today’s times of crisis, this half thought out step of lock down reflects inadequacy in predictability or stability in our policies. (statement of economic survey- need more stability in policies) Why a knee jerk reaction to any crisis automatically excludes a specific secular section. Firstly, we don’t modernize agriculture or boost agrarian economy. Don’t have good employment and lifestyle opportunities in rural/urban areas. Then, we assume employment at other places would promote mobility, liberty, opportunities and so called organic solidarity. We need a section for manual labor to work in most difficult conditions and then, consider them as a black spot on the beautiful face of our development. (orphans of our development process) And, when the time comes to take an urgent action, we think of a population who are already capable. When we seek cooperation in lock down or launch a financial package, why didn’t there was policy for temporary shelter homes..be it schools, community halls, choupals, govt buildings. People who primarily die for infrastructural development and our growth – are the first ones to be homeless, neglected, harassed, stigmatized or bear the brunt of a SHUT DOWN. Their reverse-migration can undo the very efforts of lock down. Every single person is a resource, why can’t these resources (informal laborers) are included in some form of employment like disinfecting roads, delivery guys to ensure they can earn and live a dignified life. Hopeful and dignified life is the basic right of all. And, if there is skill-set issue, then could have timely chalked out policy to address basic survival issues like food, shelter, medicines, etc. It is certainly not just a COVID crisis for India but a hunger, unemployment, poverty, illiteracy crisis as well. Life and livelihood are not separated. Society and economy is deeply interlinked and inter-related. Each single one of us has a SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY today, be it in the form of quarantine, maintaining hygiene, following govt guidelines or supporting dependants like tenants, maid, laborers, senior citizens, medical staff, etc.

And, when all this ends, we need to ask ourselves what we are trying to achieve and at what cost – marginalized, environment or Earth? Where does this UNDERCLASS lie in our policy consideration? Gandhi famously said – There is enough on Earth for everybody’s need, but not for everyone’s greed. Today, Gandhi’s insight is required to be put to test as never before.

Shift-Ed: Non-consensual Democracy

The Shift's avatarThe Shift

India has successfully withstood its democratic ethos and principles since decolonization which other third world countries could not. From the inception of India as a modern state, universal adult franchise puts India as the largest ever democracy in the world. Elections which are a common phenomena of democratic country like India, come and go like fest unlike other democratic cultures. Free and fair elections are an edifice of a democratic governance which reflects people’s aspirations at large. In a multi-party democracy like India, political parties do play the most complicated role in the functioning of these machineries. Adding to that in the game of majoritarian principles in forming the government, pre-poll and post-poll coalitions become inevitable in case of lacking majority to form a government but does such a government establish legitimacy? Does that government reflect the will of the governed what John Locke envisaged and in which the democratic…

Trump Understands the Important Difference Between Nationalism and Globalism — Astute News

President Macron’s protests against nationalism this weekend stand in stark contrast with the words of France’s WWII resistance leader and the man who would then become president: General Charles de Gaulle. Speaking to his men in 1913, de Gaulle reminded them: “He who does not love his mother more than other mothers, and his fatherland more […]

Religion’s new accountability? — a mystical möbius

A place for provocation… We’ve seen previously, Yuval Noah Harari often uses provocation to advance his arguments. The (optional/bonus) video below is excellent! It features a story of another bright soul who, like Harari, uses provocation to stimulate her students. A regular News Hour feature, this episode introduces Flossie Lewis (age 91), provocateur: […]

Religion’s new accountability? — a mystical möbius

Protected: understanding nationalism

Nationalism is psychic feeling which holds group of people together And, this psychic feeling evolves out of certain dimensions, say, language, history, culture, tradition, etc.

While pre-independence, the feeling was grown out of kingship and his/her divinity or religious traditions. In post-independence, the project of building a NATION (India) was rightfully done by our constitutional assembly.

The project was initially inherited as a fight against foreigner’s rule. It later transformed into holding the free India together. And, for that constitution and certain objectives (liberty, justice, etc) were accepted and upheld. These very objectives and rights are foundation of India’s nationalism (moving away from heterogeneity of language, religion, etc)

But, the religiosity penetrating into society is creating gulf in this united nationalism. We have come full circle, i.e., constitution’s very origin lies in the fact of upholding heterogeneity of diverse India. Yet, the diversity is being hierarchically arranged today, questioning to our very nationalism with pseudo-nationalism in the name of security, religion or nativism.

Even though these fissures would shake our Indianness today or tomorrow, but our living constitution will secure the soul of Indian nationality through rights and duties of its citizens.

Yuval Noah Harai, in his book 21 lessons for the 21st Century, gives a beautiful perspective on Nationalism. He says that the nation is basically a story we tell ourselves. No doubt every nation has its geographical boundary. But without those stories, the collective feeling of belonging to a nation would not come.

In order to subscribe to a common story, nations in Europe became smaller and smaller after the dark ages when military might was the way to define the boundary of a nation. First the nations identified themselves along languages and some of these small nations further got divided along ethnic lines.

But before we invented stories to keep the people of a region together, how did the idea of nation arise?

During our hunter gatherer days, homo sapiens did not have nations. Even about 10000 years back, during the early days of agricultural age, people did…
